Here the authors review the functions, abbreviation procedures, strategies, and working memory constraints of note taking with the aim of improving theoretical and practical understanding of the activity.

Pérez-Quiñones In this study, the authors investigated a number of electronic notetaking systems used by students at a university over the course of a semester. They identified issues when evaluating electronic note taking systems. Findings show the task of note taking in the classroom is not well supported.
