Are you okay? Emergency/Crisis

Indoor safety

Here are a few safety tips to assist you while working inside a building on campus:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, particularly the general campus layout, exits, rooms and offices;
  • Be alert in confined spaces such as washrooms and stairwells;
  • Follow your instincts. If your gut says you’re in danger, leave quickly. Call Campus Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211 or use a Code Blue station to get help;
  • Before you leave an area, check for strangers. Report strange incidents or suspicious behaviour to Campus Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211;
  • Use the buddy system. Let someone know where you are and when you expect to be home if you’re out late at night or have a friend join you;
  • Sign in with the Work Alone program;
  • Don't use headsets that distract you from paying attention to your surroundings;
  • Use exits closest to your mode of transportation;
  • Don't leave a purse, computer or other belongings out of your sight, even for a short time. Mark personal items with your initials or student number; and
  • Don't give your locker combination to others. Always spin your lock past the last number.

Tip:  Add Campus Security at 905.721.3211 as a speed dial number on your phone.
